As I struggled
for over 2 hours to make my way home in the rain after leaving work last night (due to street closings and roaming hordes of suburbanites as the fireworks display ended) I took a minute away from my rage to ponder the looming holiday.
Simply put, 4 July is the
wrong date. The Continental Congress voted on independence on
2 July 1776, they just needed a couple of days to edit the declaration and actually let "the people" know what they had decided. Seen in this light, it is refreshing to see that over two and a quarter centuries later, the tradition of secret decisions coming to light after the fact is alive and well in American politics.
It's understandable to me that Americans celebrate
Cinco de Mayo without any idea of what it actually is; after all, that's what we do on 4th of July!!
